Mevlana Cultural Center: Konya’s Spiritual and Cultural Landmark in Karatay
The Mevlana Cultural Center (Mevlana Kültür Merkezi) stands as a modern masterpiece in the Karatay district of Konya, Turkey, dedicated to the life and teachings of Jalaluddin Rumi. This architectural complex not only celebrates the legacy of the 13th-century poet and mystic but also serves as the primary venue for the annual Şeb-i Arus, the “Wedding Night with God” commemoration that draws thousands of spiritual seekers every December.
Construction of the Cultural Center began after a national design competition in 1990, with Prof. Dr. Hasan Şenel’s proposal selected from 69 entries. Although the foundation stone was laid in 1993, progress stalled until 2003 when the Konya Metropolitan Municipality expedited the remaining work. Today, the complex comprises eight interconnected blocks housing the world’s largest covered Sema Hall, accommodating up to 2,650 seated spectators, and an open-air Sema arena with a capacity of 3,000. The Sultan Veled Hall, named after Rumi’s son, provides a more intimate space for concerts and seminars with seating for 560 guests. Exhibition galleries, a spacious 2,500-square-meter foyer, and a cafeteria complete the visitor experience, while a 400-vehicle underground parking facility ensures easy access for large audiences.
Cultural programming at the Mevlana Cultural Center revolves around the mystical Sema ceremony of the Whirling Dervishes. Since its opening, the venue has offered weekly paid performances every Saturday evening, allowing guests to witness the spiritual dance that symbolizes the soul’s journey to divine love. Each December, the annual Şeb-i Arus festival transforms Konya into a global pilgrimage site, with dervishes from around the world converging to honor Rumi’s teachings of love, tolerance, and peace.
Strategically located one kilometer east of the Mevlana Museum—Rumi’s original lodge—and adjacent to the historical Üçler Cemetery, the Cultural Center is easily reached by car or public transit. Open daily from 08:00 to 17:00, it welcomes researchers, tourists, and devotees alike.
